Facial AugmentationFacial esthetics is based on proportions and a balance between the forehead nose and chin such as the’ Rule of thirds ‘. The chin therefore plays an important part in the facial equation. Therefore a weak chin – retrognathia as well as too prominent a chin either too long or too forward - prognathism, could negatively affect the appearance of a face. Genioplasty can be an adjunctive procedure and can often accompany a rhinoplasty or a nose job. Augmentation of the facial bony structure may be required when there is an inborn defect, loss of volume due to ageing or following trauma. The most common facial augmentation procedures performed are- The implants used are fully biocompatible, inert, and safe and are approved by the US FDA. Most often, the implants are placed from inside of the mouth and so there are no scars! 2 weeks of liquid/soft diet is required post operation. The implant blends in with the facial skeleton and cannot be made out as a separate entity. Implants are often used in conjunction with facial rejuvenation surgery. For younger people seeking “facial balance", implants are a great tool. Sometimes these areas can be augmented temporarily by using fillers which have to be repeated every 6- 12 months.
